The LORD Your God Requires You to Fear Him

12And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,” – Deuteronomy 10:12 (ESV)

It is there in black and white for us as Christians to take seriously, “fear the LORD your God”. That makes things a little easier for me to believe, understand, and follow. It is now not something that we are hearing it from another person, but reading and studying it from God’s Word and not just once, but multiple times (like yesterday).

What strikes me this morning is the word “require” that we see in the verse above. We are not given it as a suggestion or when we want, but we are required to “fear the LORD your God”. I am a bit of a rule follower in my life and as such, having the requirement for something drives me to do just that. It is my role to follow God in the way that he lays it out.

As a parent I have to make sure that my kids have a healthy respect and adoration of me and God has the same requirement of us as His children. We are to have that healthy respect and adoration for Him and that is all a part of the fear that we have of God.

What is your view of the requirement to “fear the LORD your God”? Are you in fear of God? What if you followed the requirement to “fear the LORD your God”?
