“6If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 8If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” – 1 John 1:6 & 8 (ESV)
Here John is spelling out the lies that we may be telling ourselves either verbally and through our actions. When I am actively disobeying God, I am certainly not living in the truth that is Jesus Christ and the gospel.
“7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:7 & 9 (ESV)
I have an out, and that out is my confession and repentance of my sin. But it all starts with my walk in Christ. As is stated in my ESV Bible’s introduction to the book of 1 John: “It reaffirms the core of Christianity, saying that either we exhibit the sound doctrine, obedience, and love that characterize all Christians, or else we are not true Christians.”
I am responsible for living a life as Christ, that demonstrates by both words and actions. I have a duty to be in the Truth to be assured of salvation.
When you approach life, are you saying one thing and doing another? What are your thoughts and beliefs around the Truth? Do you believe in your duty to the Truth?
