Bring Glory to God

And there it is, the ultimate goal of every leader and every Christian for that matter, bring glory to God. Too often we are out there looking for the direction or next goal to pursue. We are searching to be be on top or at least be headed that way. When actually we should be seeking to bring glory to the LORD and for us as Christians, that is all. Now as leaders we should also be seeking spiritual maturity and creating new leaders to round out the goals of it all, but the ultimate goal is still to bring glory to God.

Even Jesus did not look to bring glory to himself but for God (John 8:50). The goal of Jesus was to carry out the will of the Father here in this world. He sought the Father’s guidance at every turn, and where His spiritual maturity was well established He did provide for us the pattern to follow in our own growth. And let’s think about it, Jesus taught, not just so others would learn, but so they could take over for Him when He was gone. He created future leaders.

Now, how and when are we to bring glory to God. Well, that is a tough one to answer definitively as for each of us has a different role to play and frankly any number of gifts give by the Holy Spirit. But, regardless of those gifts and/or role, we are to use them to take action (1 Corinthians 10:31). We are not to sit on the sidelines and wait for someone else to do the work we are assigned by God. As spiritual leaders, we are to be in the work and not just directing the work. We have tasks to complete as well as the goals to achieve. Remember those goals start with bringing glory to God and out from there. We are to be taking action to achieve the goal.

And when do we bring glory to God, ALWAYS. At every moment of every day we are to be working to bring glory to God. Not just when things are going well or we are in church worshiping, but always. There will be times when we will be having a bad time of it or suffering and our approach and continued rejoicing will bring glory to God (1 Peter 4:13). Whatever we are doing or experiencing, we are working to accomplish the goal of bringing glory to God.

And there it is. The role as Henry & Richard Blackaby indicate, “Spiritual leadership is moving people on to God’s agenda”. This is done by working toward the three goal of, 1. “Bringing Glory to God”, 2. “Spiritual Maturity”, and 3. “Leading Others to Lead”.

What is your first and most important goal as a leader? Are you looking to rise up and be recognized for the work your doing? What if you were to start all things with the number one goal of “Bringing Glory to God”?

Righteous do Good and Suffer

What, do good and suffer. Yes, as a follower of Christ we are to do good. As a result we are not going to necessarily be in line with the society or world around us and for that we will suffer.

“¹⁷For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil. ¹⁸For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,” – 1 Peter 3:17 – 18 (ESV)

Jesus came to this world and was filled with and did good, as we know, He did not sin. He came for you and for me. He was the righteous one and yet He suffered greatly for you and for me. He died, even when He did not have to, for you and for me. And think about it, He was continually doing good and yet the world around Him persecuted Him.

In looking into this world, I see a lot going on. I see those that are doing what is put out as being good, only to find out that it was completely self-serving. Now, I do not claim to know the hearts of those doing the work, it could be that they were just naive in their thinking and actions. Then there are those who do the work of the LORD, regardless of the consequences. I think of those looking to provide support in North Carolina and being turned away as they did not “follow the protocols”. Those people are not looking for any recognition, only looking to help and yet the suffering for doing good is present.

I have to remember the example of Christ. I have to be the example of Christ. I have to be and do good. I have to know that it will not always be easy and know that I will be persecuted for it, suffer for it, and not fit in always, but it is the example that Christ left for me and it is the example that I have to leave for others.

Works of the LORD to be Blessed

“²²Bless the LORD, all his works,

in all places of his dominion.

Bless the LORD, O my soul!”

— Psalm 103:22 (ESV)

All the works of the LORD are to be blessed. Not just a few of them that suit us and those that benefit me the individual, all of them. I believe it is too easy and we take pleasure in calling out those works that we identify as “good”. There are many that the LORD does that may be “good” for one and not good for everyone. And the “good” may not be known, as we are not able to see the entirety as God does. I may only be seeing a tragedy, when God is working under blessing. An example may be the one who is suffering through health decline and God calls that person home. We may only the death that occurred and do not know of the suffering that was fully relieved through the blessing of leaving this world and the pain experienced here.

and justice for all who are oppressed.”

The LORD provides for all of His people. All those who are under the pressure of the world. All those who are persecuted. All who fear the LORD. All who recognize Him as LORD. All who are in need of His grace and recognize it as so. I am one of those who need His grace and know that only He can and will provide it. I know that He will deliver me from that which there is no need for me to suffer with any longer. I have only to remember that it is His choice as to what relief is provided and not mine.

All works of the LORD are to be blessed by me. I have to recognize that all that goes in my life are determined by God for His glory and where I may suffer at times, it will never be more than I can bear and when the time is right, He will remove that suffering from me.
