Do We Really Want to Reign

What a great question, and one that I can identify with. It seems as though what I see from “leaders” in this world is not really something that I would want to do or be. I will say that I am leader in my house and in my role in my work. Yet, what I see in “leaders” in the world is not what I expect. And, frankly, when I am in the New Heaven and New Earth, I am told that I will be able to rest, being a leader does not seem like rest.

“²⁸Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 (ESV)

Yes, Jesus says the above, and if you only look a the one verse, you will get the sense that rest is indeed what we will have. But we would be looking at things from a very narrow perspective.

Think of it this way. What is it that you like to do more than anything else and you seem to get lost in yourself and that thing to the tune that time seems to pass quickly. You may be completely worn out at the end of the time, but you look forward to that thing again and again and again. This is the idea that if you love what you do, it is not work. You find joy in the actions and want to do them more and more.

Well, this is what it will be like in the New Heaven and New Earth. I will be focused on the joy of God that whatever role I am tasked to take on will be glorious and I will find much joy in it. It will be light work from the perspective of on my soul. It may have difficulty in the task, but it will bring joy that I am working for the LORD. See below the next two verses from Jesus.

“²⁹Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. ³⁰For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:29-30 (ESV)

Jesus tells us that when we are in with Him, all things will be lighter since He has taken the heavy load upon Himself.

Reigning in the New Heaven and New Earth will not be a burden. We will be doing so from a position of the “family business” as Randy Alcorn indicates in my study. And since we are in the family of God, we are rulers with Him and each other.

But what about the challenges that come with ruling? A truly valid question. Well, there will not be any. Why you say. As we are all there to do the will of God, only need someone to direct us of where and what. Remember, there is no sin in the New Heaven. There won’t be any animosity. There won’t be any push back. There won’t be any insubordination. There will only be getting the work done in worship to the LORD so we can get back to worship of the LORD.

But, I don’t want people to be telling me what to do. I hear you, and that will not be the case. We will be receiving direction not orders. We will know of what needs to be done, and there will be someone there to direct us as to where it is to be done. And we will be directing others of where.

The New Heaven and New Earth will be filled with rulers (us) and filled with subjects (us). “We’ll be governed by Christlike rulers, and all of us will be under the grand and gracious government of Christ Himself” – Randy Alcorn

What view do you have of ruling? Are you of the school of slave driving authoritarians? What if you embraced ruling in the New Heaven and New Earth as doing that thing that brings you joy, bringing glory to God?

Our Bodies Will Be Ours, Will New Earth Be As Well

Let me clarify a bit of the title. I am asking will the New Earth be a place familiar to us, or will it be a place we have never seen yet better than what we know.

Let me start with what we know. What is it about “home”? Well, for me home is familiar. It is comfortable, filled with love, and a place I can kick my shoes off and relax in. I remember when Lori and I and the boys moved back to Texas. We enjoyed our time in Maryland and would not trade it for anything, yet when we crossed the Red River into Texas, we felt the difference. We still had about 6-7 hours until we reached our final destination, but we were home. It was familiar and comfortable and a place we felt compelled to kick off our shoes and relax.

The New Earth will be like that. We will be familiar with the surroundings. We will be comfortable. We will feel the love there. We will know people. We will feel compelled to kick off our shoes and rest. So yes, the New Earth will be ours as well. We will know the place as our home and find comfort there.

“¹Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. ²In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” – John 14:1-2 (ESV)

Randy Alcorn wrote the following that I believe captures what we will find, “This damaged creation cries out to be repaired, and it is His plan to repair it. He’s going to remodel the old earth on a grand scale.” Christ is fixing all the cracks in the wall. He is remodel the kitchen and painting the bedrooms. Jesus is mowing the grass and adding new landscaping. He is fixing the fence and putting on a new roof. But even with all of the fixing up, we will know that we are home. The creak in the floor when you walk in the front door will still be there. The layout from the kitchen to the back porch will still be the same. And He will be there to great us and welcome us HOME.

What is your thought as to the New Earth? Do you believe it will be all new such that you have never seen before? What difference is the feeling to know that it will be familiar and you will know the New Earth to be the place of comfort and rest that you remember, only back to before it was broken?

Endure Trials, be Rewarded in Rest

I am in the position, as a Christian to endure trials. I am to continue with the work of the LORD through my life here in this world. Rest is not in the plan right now, although it is in the plan in due time. Once I have finished the work, there will be plenty of time for rest, and when that time comes, I will be able to do so and be rewarded as well.

“⁹Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. ¹⁰Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.” — Revelation 3:9-10 (ESV)

I am enduring the trials before me today. I am working through them with the guidance of the LORD and as such, will prevail. More importantly, I will be rewarded for the work. No, maybe not rewarded in the now as would like. I will be rewarded when the work is done. I will have the opportunity to rest and as I am, God will make those else in the world have there time of suffering through trial. I will be resting and the world will come and see that I have done the work before and know that the LORD has cared for me all the while.

I know, rest once the work is done, but I finished the one thing. The work of the LORD is not just the one item we are able to scratch off the to-do list. I am not just able to go to church and then revel in the blessings of the LORD. I have more to do. I may get a moment to “catch my breath” after completing a task, and then it is back to the work to bring glory to the LORD. Once I have caught my breath I am able to draw on the strength of the LORD and proceed on to the next and complete that work as well and then on to the next and so on.

All of the work for the LORD takes time and effort and endurance that comes from the refining the LORD has put me through in the daily trials. I have to embrace the trials knowing that I am being refined and built up to make it through and on to the next. I will have plenty of time to rest when all of the work is complete.

I know that the work of the LORD seems to be never ending, but it will come to an end. And when it does, God will provide the chance for me to rest. In that rest I will be rewarded and that reward will be enough for me to recharge and take on again the next that He has for me. I will be able to see the work that was done and the trials endured. I will see the trials on those remaining. I will be recognized for being loved by God. I will be allowed to recharge in preparation for the work to come.

God loves me and rewards me for all that I have and will do. I know that the work is hard and that there is more of it than I can endure as a human. But God is preparing me daily through the trials before me. He is giving me the strength to endure and will also give me the opportunity to rest and be rewarded once the work is complete.
