Built Together

As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are built together.

“¹⁹So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, ²⁰built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, ²¹in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. ²²In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” – Ephesians 2:19-22 (ESV)

We are not in this alone. We have brothers and sisters to travel with. Paul makes it clear in the above that we “are fellow citizens” and that we are “of the household of God”. WE are a “dwelling place for God” and the collective that we are is growing “into a holy temple in the Lord”.

I know that in the above paragraph I have restated a lot of what Paul writes. I did that on purpose as it is how it lands on me related to my study this morning. WE are in this together and it is important to remember that. I have mentioned before that I am an introverted person and being in solitude is just fine for me (I may not leave the house except on Sundays). But even saying that and being that way, I still go to church with my brothers and sisters in Christ to worship together, to be in the presence of “fellow citizens”, to be in the presence of God.

“²⁰For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” – Matthew 18:20 (ESV)

WE are meant to be together to commune with the LORD. He builds us up together to be bigger than life itself. I or you alone are good in our pursuit of Christ, but together we are a mighty force in the name of God. God gave us each gifts to use for His glory and those gifts, where they are good on their own, working in concert with another is even more powerful. Together God builds us up to be the unstoppable workers. We is certainly greater than me.

How are you traversing in this world? Are you working to build yourself up alone? What if you embraced that God builds US up together for our good and to accomplish all that He has planned?

Build up in Love to Love

This morning I continue my study of the word “builds”. I was led to Ephesians 4 where Paul continues discussing the Body of Christ, the church. Where this is the focus of the passage, I was touched by the below verses that round out the passage that seemed to refer to me as a follower of Christ.

“¹⁵Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, ¹⁶from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” – Ephesians 4:15-16 (ESV)

Here what I see is Paul giving me instruction on what I am to grow into and how I am to be built up. I am to grow up, into Christ and do so by being built up in love. I realized that it is more than just learning and knowing, but it is becoming. I am to embrace the love that is Christ and grow into being like Christ. Christ is love and isn’t He what we all should strive to become.

NO, I will never be Christ. I am and will not be the savior of the world. I am a sinner and even as those sins have been forgiven and wiped away, I will never be sinless. I cannot become Christ. But, I can grow to be like Christ. I can act out of love, provide love, and be built up in love. Christ is love and I can be like Him.

What do I get from growing up and being built up in love? I get security. I get to be loved or more accurately, I get to experience and realize love. I get to give love and experience and realize just what love does in others as it has done in me. I get to be like Christ and carry on knowing that regardless of my circumstances, I am loved and will be rewarded in heaven with even more.

Verses 15 and 16 above give me the confidence to be built up in love and as Christ is love, I am built up in Christ. This building up in love leads to me growing up into love and into Christ.

What are you built up in and into? Are you looking to be built up into something or someone who seems to have it all together? What if you instead focused on love, being built up in love and into being like Christ to experience and realize what love really is?

The LORD Builds Our House

This morning as I study, I am reminded that the LORD is indeed the one to build my house.

“¹Unless the Lord builds the house,

those who build it labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the watchman stays awake in vain.”

— Psalm 127:1 (ESV)

As noted in the commentary of my bible, “The basic theme of this wisdom psalm is that without the LORD’s blessing, all human toil is worthless.” “of course those who build a house must labor on it, and certainly the watchman of a city must stay awake. At the same time they must carry our their efforts in faith, trusting God to make the work beneficial.” In order for sustainability, there must be a reliance on the LORD.

I take this also to be more than just the physical building of the house and the watching over a city. I see this in the success of that which is in the house. I want to ensure that my family is built on the LORD and that which He provides.

The LORD is the author of me and I am to give Him the glory. He provides for and blesses me and my house. I know that He does so thanks to my accepting of His gift of salvation. Yet, in order for my house to maintain, I must be reliant on the LORD. In verse one above, the author states the LORD “builds the house”. I see that as not just building, but also maintaining as a sort of warranty plan to keep the house in good shape.

Our house will last many lifetimes when we take care to ensure that it is kept up according to the builder’s specifications. The builder here is the LORD and the specifications are His Word as He guides us from day to day. It is great that the Word of God is available to everyone and all the time to review and follow. There is no digging for the plans or working with out dated equipment. The specifications are timeless and always available. We only need to consult God’s Word for how to work through whatever has come up.

Lori and I are likely in our physical house for the foreseeable future and where the house itself is only 10 years old, we will have to look for and consult the plans to begin some of the maintenance even now. But, in our God fearing house, which will be 29 years in April, I like to believe that we are in constant review of the plans as even now the LORD is building. Our boys may have moved to begin work on their personal houses, Lori and I are adding rooms for what comes next. And what better place to consult for those rooms than the master builder Himself, the LORD our God.

Who is the builder of your house? Do you see your house as built and looking for the next? What if you see that your house if continuing to be built and maintained by the LORD and the plans are in His Word?

Prepare for Departure

Being a leader is noble and rewarding. It does however carry with it some challenges. One of which is preparing for your departure from the role. It is common for leaders to work right from their installation through their exit from the organization. There are a lot of factors that drive that commonality, but the real thing is that the leaders never prepare for when they are gone from the organization.

It is important, dare I say paramount for the leader to build strength in the organization that is ready to take over and continue the work of that organization when the time comes. There should always be someone on deck to lead with confidence and skill to do so.

The same is said for the spiritual leader. The role of the spiritual leader is to guide people to God’s agenda. Give them the tools that will prompt them to seek the LORD in all things, whether inside or outside the organization. Those that are being prepared should know of and have those influences that come from God, His authentication, have encounters with Him, character/integrity, and preparation. They should be seeking the spiritual maturity that demonstrates continued growth and learning and reliance on God for all. And they should work to bring glory to God always.

I know that I have failed in these areas in the past and may only be in the middle of preparing my family’s successor, but I am working on it daily by doing just what I am doing here. I am in God’s Word, learning and growing in to the man He has for me to be. I am demonstrating to my boys what it means to be the leader of the household and can only do more of the same. At some point I will no longer be here, but my family that comes after me will be prepared to continue. I am preparing for my departure.

What is your view of what comes after you leave? Are you not concerned as you will be gone? What if you were to take the approach that it is your role to ensure that the organization continues to seek the will of the LORD even after you are gone?

Be Prepared

The motto for the scout movement is, “Be Prepared”. This phrase also influences the spiritual leader as he begins and proceeds in leadership.

It is important to be prepared for the role that you are taking on. For example, if you do not know anything about basketball, it will make it difficult to play the game, much less lead a team. If you don’t know anything about music, playing an instrument will not generally go very well, and leading an orchestra, well who will follow you. I recall a US Senate hearing related to interviewing a new director of the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). The nominee, demonstrated his complete lack of knowledge as related to aviation and was swiftly rejected.

But what does preparation mean and/or look like? It is widely known that learning comes from a number of places, so the formal education is not the only source. Now, it is important to be educated in a field in order to gain knowledge of that field, I will not argue. But what I will point out is that there are people who know more about a subject or field based on their experience and time spent in that field.

My father-in-law worked in the signage field for many years and then had his own welding shop for many years after that. An engineer came to him with specifications for a flag pole and my father-in-law rejected them telling the engineer that what he had was overkill and he could indeed get by with less to accomplish what he was wanting. The engineer left, recalculated and returned confirming with my father-in-law the new specifications would indeed work. It was not the formal education, but the deliberate study and experience in the field that produced the results.

Leadership is not that much different. It is preparation in the field that will produce the results. One must have a “plan to continue growing personally and mentally” – Henry & Richard Blackaby, in order to be prepared to lead spiritually. Leaders should stop and take a look at where they are and seek out the resources to get them where they want to be.

I get a lot of ribbing from my family for wanting to be prepared. I set up contingency plans on top of contingency plans to ensure that I will generally know what to do if things go a little sideways. The ribbing continues until that thing happens and the quick adjustment, that I had prepared for, is made and we just continue with our path. It is the knowledge and preparation that make the difference. Shouldn’t our preparation to spiritually lead be the same.

“²⁹Do you see a man skillful in his work?

He will stand before kings;

he will not stand before obscure men.”

— Proverbs 22:29 (ESV)

That skill comes from study and preparation. It does not generally come automatically. It is something that is worked on over time and will deliberate action. To have a skill or be a leader, we mus be prepared.

What is your thought on skills? Are you of the opinion that someone is just born with it? What if you were to see and understand that is more about learning and growing in the field and preparing for the role, in this case the role of spiritual leader?

Discipline Is Not the End

Get in trouble and face discipline. And then get in trouble again and face discipline. At some point we learn and stay away from trouble. But see the pattern here, discipline is not the end of it all. This is something that Cain learned from God after killing his brother Abel.

“¹³Cain said to the Lord, ‘My punishment is greater than I can bear. ¹⁴Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.’ ¹⁵Then the Lord said to him, ‘Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.’” – Genesis 4:13-15 (ESV)

Cain was being disciplined for the act of killing His brother and sinning against God. He was sure that this would be the end and he would surely die soon at the hand of God or some other party. Well, I can say that I would likely be thinking the same thing. I know that even now when I sin, I expect the worst and that things may come to an end.

But what do we see from God, mercy. Was God angry with Cain, sure. Was God right in disciplining Cain for the sin, of course. Was God well within Himself to make this the end of Cain, I believe so. But, God did not make this the end, in fact when you look at verse 15, God went forward with ensuring Cain’s protection that he would continue and bear fruit for the LORD.

I see this morning that sin is not the end. When we are repentant, the LORD will show mercy to us, forgive us, and protect us for His good work. So the discipline is there to strengthen us that we would go forward having learned from the instance and do the work of God.

What is your view of discipline? Do you see it as the end of all things? What if you were to recognize it for the learning and growth opportunity that is provides in your walk with Christ?

Overcome Through Maturity

Accepting Christ as my savior was great and certainly needed in my life, yet this is only the first step in overcoming the evil one. This morning I am in 1 John and have been reminded of the stages of Christian maturity.

“¹²I am writing to you, little children,

because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.

¹³I am writing to you, fathers,

because you know him who is from the beginning.

I am writing to you, young men,

because you have overcome the evil one.

I write to you, children,

because you know the Father.

¹⁴I write to you, fathers,

because you know him who is from the beginning.

I write to you, young men,

because you are strong,

and the word of God abides in you,

and you have overcome the evil one.”

– 1 John 2:12-14 (ESV)

First, you have the “children” who have just learned of Christ and are beginning their relationship with Him. They have no history with Him and only now have opened their eyes and are on the journey to spiritual maturity. This can be the young or the older that have found Christ as their savior.

Second, you have the “fathers” who have been in the faith for some time and are fully comfortable as they work through the world. These know that Christ is in control and have dedicated themselves to His mission in their lives each day for some time. Again, this does not have to be the older, but those who have spent valuable time with Christ for some time.

Third, you have the “young men” who have been learning in their relationship with Christ, and yet still find persecution at every turn. They are building their strength in Christ and every day will grow stronger and stronger to overcome the evil one. These again may be youthful or older, but they are in the growing phase of maturity.

The further along we get in our maturity, the more fluid will be our strength to overcome. It does not mean that we will not face persecution or challenges as the evil one is around every corner. It is the light of the LORD in us that will overcome the darkness and keep the evil one at bay. It is our maturity in Christ through His Word as we meditate on it day and night that gives us the strength and wisdom to overcome. Whether you are the “little child”, the “father”, or the “young man” it is always the time to continue in our growth to and into maturity in Christ through His Word.

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

²but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.”

Where are you finding your strength to overcome the evil one? Are you looking to yourself and believe that you have already arrived with the strength? What if you were to realize that you are still maturing and should look to continued growth and maturity through God’s Word?
