Righteous, In The Heart

Righteous actions are seen on the outside and displayed for the world to see. By seeing the righteous actions follow it as the example of what right looks like. Yet, there is more to it than just the outward visible actions of being righteous.

10Let the righteous one rejoice in the LORD

and take refuge in him!

Let all the upright in heart exult!”

— Psalm 64:10 (ESV)

Being righteous starts in the heart. Righteous actions are the outward display of being upright in the heart. Being righteous is taking action based on the will of the LORD and not for or expecting anything in return. There is nothing from the world that will make the actions worth while. The worth while comes from the LORD and rejoicing in His greatness.

This weekend I am helping my son move across town. Yes, he is my son and it is my duty to provide for him and his brother, yet this is his life and his move. I have no stake in where he lives and have no say either. I will labor with and for him as an act of love and service. And, I expect nothing in return for my actions. I know what you may be thinking, how is helping someone move a righteous action. Well it may not be, but it is an example of service and actions that come from the heart where the world has no ability to make it worth while.

We have to take on more righteous actions that come from the heart and expect nothing in return from the world. The reality it that the would will be suspicious of our actions no matter what actions we take on that do not fit the glorification of the world view. And that is okay by me, as I am not here to please the world, I am here to please the LORD.

Chapter 64 in Psalms is titled “Hide Me from the Wicked” in my English Standard Version (ESV) bible. And verse ten above is the last verse in the chapter. We should be asking the LORD to “hide” us from the wickedness in the world, and look for shelter “in him”. We have to take on righteous actions, but ensure that they are coming from the heart where we are lifting up the LORD with each of them.

Where are your actions coming from? Are you bringing them to the world from a place of self-aggrandizement and looking for something in return? What if you looked inward to your heart and brought forth actions to exult the LORD, since He has hidden you in Him?

Righteous Through Refuge in the LORD

39The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;

he is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

40The LORD helps them and delivers them;

he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,

because they take refuge in him.”

— Psalm 37:39-40 (ESV)

The righteous are not righteous because they do righteous actions. They are righteous “because the take refuge in him”, the LORD.

Bad actors do things that seem righteous. Think of the tyrant that gives to charity. Or the billionaire that stops on the street to lift up a vagrant. And think of the authoritarian that shows up at the plant owned for a visit and gives everyone a company t-shirt. Are these to be considered righteous. I say no, as when they occur once, they are the anomaly and serve more as ego photo ops as opposed to righteous actions done out of love. Don’t get me wrong, I do not take away from the actions and the impact they have, I only take issue with the thought that these actions are somehow righteous.

It is the righteous actions that come from the heart and in response to the will of God that He sees, hears, delivers, and saves. The actions themselves are good in the moment and will impact in that moment. It is the response to the will of the LORD that really does the work. The righteous do not take action for themselves, they take action for the LORD. It is the dwelling place of the LORD in the heart of the individual that leads to the righteous action.

The righteous focus their attention on the LORD and seek His guidance into where to focus energy for His glory. His glory will likely come at sacrifice to the individual, yet that sacrifice is not even noticed as the righteous see only the work for the LORD and not on themselves.

Bad actors are more concerned with their own “appearance” and lose sight of the glory of the LORD. The righteous find refuge in the LORD and are not concerned with how things look to the outside world. This is where the LORD takes up delivering the righteous from the world and provides the safety and security of His glory.

From where are your actions coming? Are they coming from you desire to be viewed in some way? What if you were to find your actions in the glory of the LORD as you dwell with Him?

The Righteous Have Endless Giving

Have you ever wondered how some can give and give and give and never seem to be wanting? I know that I have seen folks who always seem to be in the fold of providing for the needy and yet, they themselves seem as though they could use some help themselves. On the outside, they seem less than flush monetarily, yet they are always providing for others.

25I have been young, and now am old,

yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken

or his children begging for bread.

26He is ever lending generously,

and his children become a blessing.”

— Psalm 37:25-26 (ESV)

This morning I was reminded that the righteous are always taken care of by God and that they think less of themselves to be generous with others. In the verse above I am reminded that those who are generous with others when they seem to be in need themselves is a product of their righteous actions and being cared for by God as they do the work He has assigned them.

I look at myself and what we have in our lives monetarily. We are not rich by any means. Our newest car is a 2005 model and has 250k miles. We live in a modest home. We do not have the latest fashions and the computer I am typing on right now will not support Windows 11. Yet, we have the chance every day to make an impact on those around us. We recently supported a program that provides for the elderly in assisted living spaces that are in need of basic living items. No, not a big fanfare of things but giving none the less.

I am not saying that I or my wife are righteous. What I am saying is that if you just look at the outside of folks, you may not see the whole picture of what God has provided. Contentment in what you have now, does not mean that you are destitute in the LORD. He will care for those who put Him first in ways that society does not understand.

When actions are done in the name of the LORD, there is nothing that will stand in the way of the giving. There is no bottom to the barrel. There is no end to the provision of the LORD. Remember what Jesus did with the boy’s lunch of five loaves of bread and two fish.

19Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. 21And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.” – Matthew 14:19-21 (ESV)

There is endless generosity that is from the righteous. It may not be large sums of monetary help, but the righteous are always there to help. It could be giving a ride, or giving some clothes, or providing lunch, the righteous actions are there in the time of need regardless of the extent of the monetary ability of those providing.

What is your experience with generosity? Are you looking to the rich to do all the work as they have the financial means? What if you were to simply look to provide what you can when the need arises and allow the LORD to multiply the generosity of the righteous action?

The LORD is Aware

The LORD is aware of all that is going on. I know, that is something that is certainly a given. But I believe that we may forget, or avoid that fact as we go through this world. It does not matter what it is that I am doing, God is always aware of my actions. Some of those actions are righteous and pleasing to Him and others, not so much.

15The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous

and his ears toward their cry.

16The face of the LORD is against those who do evil,

to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

17When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears

and delivers them out of all their troubles.

18The LORD is near to the brokenhearted

and saves the crushed in spirit.”

— Psalm 34:15-18 (ESV)

Notice the wording here in the Psalms. The LORD is paying attention fully to the righteous. He sees them, hears them, delivers them, and saves them. And what about those who are not righteous? Remember, that only the LORD can declare one as righteous. I am unknown to be righteous on my own. It takes God to recognize it and declare it. I can only do righteous actions and have hope, or the confident expectation that the LORD will see me, hear me, deliver me, and save me as as result of those actions.

Then there are those who do evil. This is not those that backslide and are not doing righteous actions, this is those who are intentionally doing things against the LORD. Notice that the LORD will not see, hear, deliver, or save them. He will in fact cut them off from the rest of the world. The LORD is aware, yet He will not acknowledge them as His to be seen, heard, delivered, or saved when they are taking of the evil actions.

Now, if everyone has the chance to turn to the LORD, where does this put those who are not seen, heard, delivered, or saved. That is where those righteous actions done in the name of the LORD play out. It is those righteous actions of bringing the good news to everyone where all have that chance to find the LORD. Even those who do evil. Those bringing the good news are holding to the righteous actions of the LORD and He is aware. And those who receive the good news and take Him into their heart and turn to Him and away from evil, will be seen, heard, delivered, and saved.

It is the full commitment to the LORD and the good news that was shared that turns our actions from self-centered to God-centered and in doing so, those actions become righteous and now the LORD sees, hears, delivers, and saves.

Again, these actions and the acceptance of the LORD do not make us righteous, only our actions can be righteous and in line with His plan. Continued righteous actions and my hearts full devotion to the LORD is where I have to be. When I am there, maybe the LORD will count me as righteous. But again, that is not for me to worry with, I am only to do the will of the LORD as I know that He is aware.

What actions are you doing? Are you seen, heard, delivered, and saved by the LORD? What if you focused your attention on doing the righteous actions and devoting your heart to the LORD knowing that He is aware?

Guidelines for Righteous

I am a sinner who needs guidance in my life to ensure that I am on the path God would have me on. I am not able to do it on my own.

7The law of the Lord is perfect,

reviving the soul;

the testimony of the Lord is sure,

making wise the simple;

8the precepts of the Lord are right,

rejoicing the heart;

the commandment of the Lord is pure,

enlightening the eyes;

9the fear of the Lord is clean,

enduring forever;

the rules of the Lord are true,

and righteous altogether.”

— Psalm 19:7-9 (ESV)

And there it is, the guideline for me in my navigation of this world. These are telling me that the LORD is the guideline. That is all I need to know and where I should look to for the guidance in avoiding sin.

God’s Word is where I have to look. He has provided the road map for me to reach righteous. As I recently wrote, righteous comes from Him. He is the place to go when needing direction. And that direction is needed at all times.

Yes, I am a born again Christian saved by the grace of God and some might think that I have reached the pinnacle of the Christian faith. And where I have been forgiven of my sins, I have not been made sinless.

Just yesterday I committed sins that I continue to commit. I seem to get tempted into them and find it difficult to avoid. The LORD sees and feels my sin and loves me anyway. He waits for me to repent, knowing that I will continue to struggle with that sin. And He forgives me. He knows that I am His and that when I come to Him I am repentant. He knows I don’t “want” to sin, that it is just a part of me being a sinner.

The LORD has placed this media in my path as a way to share my thoughts on His Word. I will again say that I am not a biblical or theological scholar by any means. I am just a sinner who is working to do the will of God and share Him with as many I can. I am not afraid for you hear that I struggle with sin as you are the same as I in that respect.

I am not asking anyone to see me as righteous as only God can declare me righteous. I can only do things that will be considered righteous. I can do those things that are in God’s plan and impact the people in my life with His Word. I need a guideline and outline of how to go about doing those righteous things. In God’s Word I find what I need. Here in the verses above I see the guidance toward those righteous things. Following the law, testimony, precepts, commandments, fear, and the rules of the LORD lead me in the right path.

What are your guidelines? Are you looking to the world to get you on target? What if you followed the LORD and used His Word as your guidelines for righteous?

Righteous from the LORD

7For the LORD is righteous;

he loves righteous deeds;

the upright shall behold his face.”

— Psalm 11:7 (ESV)

Yes, you see that right. Being righteous comes directly from the LORD. He is where we learn of being righteous as we follow His example. Jesus was righteous and as my example I have the proper way to be righteous myself.

When I am doing the will of God as He spells out for me to do, I will find myself righteous in those moments. I want to be careful with what I say here in that I do not want to declare myself righteous, as only God can declare someone righteous. What I can and will say is that my deeds will be righteous as I conduct them in the will of the LORD.

Recently I was fortunate to listen to the Dean of Dallas Theological Seminary-Houston, Dr. Pierre Cannings speak on the history of God and how His history shows us the future of God through His consistency throughout history which will be consistent through the now and throughout the future. Where the entire message was fantastic, one thing that stood out to me was that I do nothing and that God is the author and director of all that happens in my life. This hits me this morning as I study in that I get all from the LORD and including the example of righteous behaviors.

I certainly do not consider myself righteous. I struggle daily with sin and staying focused on Him. There are a lot of distractions in this world, including those that lead me to believe I had something to do with it. It is not me, it is God working in and through me. Yes, I pick up the hammer to hit the nail, but it is God who gave me the nail and hammer and the physical ability to use them.

Being positive, empowered, or good are attributes that are certainly important to have. But, being righteous trumps all of those. Being righteous is will lead to those attributes, they will not lead to being righteous. I have to continue studying God’s Word to find righteousness. I know where it lies and comes from and that is with the LORD. My job is to do the will of God and allow Him to see me always doing so. This will please Him and maybe, just maybe He will consider me righteous.

Where do you find yourself looking for righteousness? Are you looking/finding it in your own actions and through being positive, empowered, or good? What if you looked to the LORD as the source of righteousness and strive to be like His example and allow Him to declare your righteousness?

The Way of the Righteous

Just what is the way of the righteous?

5Commit your way to the Lord;

trust in him, and he will act.”

— Psalm 37:5 (ESV)

And there you have it. The way of the righteous is to commit to the Lord and to trust Him.

As a christian, the way of the righteous is the way that I should be going. I have to strive to be righteous in hopes that I will measure up when the time comes for me in the presence of God and the judgment. I am to be committed to the LORD and trust that He leads me in the path He would have me go. I have to remember and understand that it is His will, not mine that takes we there.

6for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked will perish.”

— Psalm 1:6 (ESV)

There are different paths to take in this world, and where they seem to lead to the good, it is not the way of the righteous. There is the path of positivism. There is the path of empowerment. There is the path of being good. Each of these can seem to get thing done and move you in the right direction. But, they will fade if they are not rooted in the LORD. Each of these when they come from us are simply not enough to overcome.

Now, I am not saying that it is not worth it to be positive, empowered, and good. It is certainly part of the will of God to be so. The thing that I have found in my study of God’s Word is that these are products of committing to the way of the Lord. These in and of themselves do not get us to the way of the Lord. These come from the way of the Lord. We cannot force ourselves into being righteous. I will also say that where we cannot force it, it is not a bad place to start.

When we are positive, empowered, and good we will see some results for sure. We will certainly move forward and things will fall in place for us. The thing is that it will not always fall into place and without being rooting in God, there will be limited if any staying power. As soon as things take a turn away from the direction you want them to go, there will be failure that is difficult to overcome.

The way of the Lord is full of staying power. I may get down when things do not go my way, but when I know that I can count on the goodness of God, I am able to keep going as everything is in His plan. I may not reach my destination when I wanted to, but the LORD knows that has I done so, I may have missed another opportunity that would make the destination just that much sweeter. I may experience loss as a result of life, yet I would be able to see the good that is because of it.

“The LORD knows the way of the righteous” and where I am not sure if I measure up, I have to continue to commit my “way to the Lord”. I am committing to leading a life with Him as my example. I am committing to the path He has for me. I am committing to all that comes. I have to remember that Jesus did not have it easy. He was persecuted way beyond anything any of us will experience. He worked daily to bring God’s Word to all even as He was spit on, beaten, and even killed. I may not be killed, but the way of the LORD will not be easy, yet it is worth it.

What way are you going? Are you taking the positive, empowered, and/or good way? What if you took the way of the LORD and allowed Him to provide the results?

Righteous is Being Thoughtful and Deliberate

I have a saying that I use often, “Focus on Getting it Right, Not Just Getting it Done”. I have mentioned this before here in my writing and feel as though I was lead to this saying this morning once again in my study of the word “righteous”. As I wrote before on the definition of righteous from Merriam-Webster, it is that we should act “in accord with divine or moral law”. In order to do so, I have to consider divine or moral law in my actions, and to do so means that I must first know and understand the divine or moral law and be thoughtful and deliberate in it carrying out.

Let’s consider David and Saul. Saul was no fan of David and actively sought him out to kill him. This is certainly a trying time for David and he was well within his rights to defend himself to the point of killing Saul to do so. In fact, in the passage from 1 Samuel 24, we are reminded that His enemy would be handed over to him.

4And the men of David said to him, ‘Here is the day of which the Lord said to you, “Behold, I will give your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.”’” – 1 Samuel 24:4a (ESV)

It is pretty clear here as I read, that David would be presented an opportunity to stop all the madness of pursuing to kill, by taking action in a situation given to him by the LORD. David was being pursued and found himself in the situation where he had the chance to end the situation and relax. Based on the words said, it seemed as David was presented the chance to kill his pursuer. But wait. David stopped and thought and instead took some deliberate action to avoid bloodshed and accomplish the same.

4Then David arose and stealthily cut off a corner of Saul’s robe.” – 1 Samuel 24:4b (ESV)

What, he only cut off the corner of the robe? Well, David was acting “in accordance with divine or moral law”. Remember the commandments, thou shall not kill and love thy neighbor as thyself. David spared the life of Saul in accordance to the LORD.

6He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord’s anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 7So David persuaded his men with these words and did not permit them to attack Saul. And Saul rose up and left the cave and went on his way.” – 1 Samuel 24:6-7 (ESV)

How often do we take hasty action based on information we have at the time and do not consider all the information that we have at our disposal. David was given information and in the moment it made sense for him to take the decisive action of killing Saul. But when he considered the rest of the information, he thought better of it and elected to act accordingly. And what did he get for his action?

17He said to David, ‘You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil. 18And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 19For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.’” – 1 Samuel 24:17-20 (ESV)

He was declared as righteous and acknowledged for what he would become, by his very enemy none the less. Saul recognized that David was well within his rights to take the decisive action and kill him. Yet, David was thoughtful and deliberate and acted according to God’s Law and spared his life. David got it right.

I have to remember that to get it right means that I have to be thoughtful and deliberate. I have to look at and understand all of the information available and not just that which is presented in the moment. Will this make me righteous, I do not know. But it will help to ensure that I am taking actions that would be considered righteous, “in accordance with divine or moral law”.

How do you act in situations? Are you reactive with the information you have in the moment? What if you were to slow down, consider all information, and act thoughtfully and deliberately, “in accordance with divine or moral law”?

Righteous, There are Not Many

This morning I have been reminded of the fact that there are indeed not many in this world who are righteous. I am reading in Genesis of Noah and God’s destruction on the earth to rid it of the evil that had taken hold. Of all those on the earth, He identified only Noah as being righteous.

5The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” and “8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” – Genesis 6:5 & 8 (ESV)

The LORD found that Noah was a man following Him. Only one man and his immediate family were to be saved.

9These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God. 10And Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.” – Genesis 6:9-10 (ESV)

I do not know how many were in the world at the time, but for the LORD to only identify one to be righteous, that is quite the small percentage. I am sure that there were thousands if not hundreds of thousands and only one was determined to be righteous.

Now, let’s take a look at the percentages and translate that to this world today. If there were 100,000 people, then Noah would have been .001% of them. Think about it, with a million then there would only be 10 righteous. And a society of a billion people would only have 10,000 righteous. And with the current population of the earth being around 8 billion, that would be only about 80,000 as righteous. Now, that looks and seems like a good number of people, but consider that even if rounded to 100,00 people there would be only the city of Davenport, IA (according to the estimate of 2023 found in Wikipedia) that would considered righteous, and that is only one town among the world. And think, that is presuming a population of 100,000 along with Noah. There are not many righteous in the world. And, as much as I would like to believe I am righteous, would I make the cut with the LORD.

I have to look at my role here in this world. My role is to spread the gospel to all I come in contact with. I do not, as Noah did not, have to concern myself with all else that is going on in the world. I know that there is evil out there as did Noah. And just as he did, I am to put my head down and do the work that the LORD has for me. Noah built the ark and I am to spread the gospel. Whether or not I am righteous is not for me to decide, that is left up to and judged by the LORD. My role is simply to do the work and allow the LORD to see the work.

There are not many righteous in this world, and that is known. I do not know if I am one of them, and that is okay. I am to do the work that the LORD has for me and know that when my time is up, I will find myself in glory.

What is your understanding of your righteousness? Do you look out for yourself as if you are righteous and all others are not? What if you look at the numbers and realize that there are not many who are righteous and that only God knows their names, so you put your head down and do the work He has for you until your time is done?

Righteous Defined

This morning I am beginning to study the word “righteous” and thought it a good idea to look into the word first and then begin my study of the biblical applications.

Righteous – 1: acting in accord with divine or moral law: free from guilt or sin 2a: morally right or justifiable b: arising from an outraged sense of justice or morality (Merriam-Webster Online)

As I review the definition I see that to be counted as righteous, one is to be in line with God, “accord with divine or moral law”. One also is “justifiable”. I believe we have to be careful with our view of being righteous to ensure that there is a fit into those.

Someone that is righteous is not necessarily perfect. There are some that did/do questionable things and frankly may not be liked in the world. When just viewing the actions of the person, one might view them differently although they were following the will of God. Noah was a righteous man although he did build and ark and only took his family and animals allowing for the rest of the world to be wiped out. Abraham was a righteous man who was willing to kill his son. David was a righteous man and he killed a man.

Looking at the definition, and taking into account being in line with God and being justified in action, I know that each of these men above were certainly that. If you just look at the actions of them without knowing the whole rest of the story, one might see them as evil and only in line with their own wants and desires, Noah to survive, Abraham to keep his authority, and David to demonstrate his power and strength. Yet, when you look closer at the reason for their actions you see the alignment with God, Noah told by God to take only his family to start fresh in the world, Abraham demonstrating his obedience to God no matter the cost, and David to demonstrate that with God all things are possible.

I believe that we have to be more in line with God than with anything or anyone else. This alignment with God does not guarantee anything, although it is a great place to start. When aligned with God, I will find myself morally correct and justified in my actions. Will I always get it right, OH NO. But more often than not, I will.

Am I righteous, that I do not know, as only God will determine that. I will say that I do what I can to be in alignment with God. I know that my actions that are in response to God are justified in His plan and therefore I am in His will. The consequences I may experience in this world are of little concern when I consider that I am doing things in the will and as a result of follow the law of God. I will be told when I meet the LORD in heaven as to whether or not I was righteous in this world and until then it is my responsibility to following His will and striving for righteousness.

What is your understanding of the word righteous? Are you of the opinion that it is something that the world recognizes? What if you focused instead on being aligned with God as opposed to the world?
