Trials Only for a Little While

I feel as though I am always being persecuted and going through trials. I feel as though I am never given a moment to just enjoy.

“⁶In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,” — 1 Peter 1:6 (ESV)

As Peter says here those trials are “for a little while”. I have to remember that where God will put me through trials, it is really only for a little while. I am not tested continually. I am given tests to build up my endurance and then I am given the chance to use that endurance in the completion of the work He has for me. I am then able to rejoice in the accomplishment of the work and move on to the next.

Yes, I am not really rewarded here in this world other than knowing that I have indeed done the work God has for me. And those tests seem to be coming and remaining for the long haul. But, I have to remember that this is not my final destination. I am only here in this world for a little while and only really just passing through. I have heaven waiting for me and my time in heaven will be an eternity while my time here in this world is finite and short by comparison.

Knowing that I am in this world for only the short while, the trials that come are only during my time here in this world and therefor are short. These trials are only for a little while and are building up my endurance so that I will have the strength to do Gods Work. And that work will be for the long haul in heaven. I am being prepared for the eternity of work for God.

What a revelation for me this morning. I am being prepared in my short time here in this world to enjoy my long time of eternity in heaven. I will be able to fully enjoy my eternity thanks to the trials and tests I am experiencing in this world. The short term tests are good for my long term joy.

What are you going through in this world? Are you looking at these trials as the long haul? What if you were to look at these trials as the temporary and know that the eternity with God in heaven is what you are being prepared?

Endure Trials, be Rewarded in Rest

I am in the position, as a Christian to endure trials. I am to continue with the work of the LORD through my life here in this world. Rest is not in the plan right now, although it is in the plan in due time. Once I have finished the work, there will be plenty of time for rest, and when that time comes, I will be able to do so and be rewarded as well.

“⁹Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you. ¹⁰Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth.” — Revelation 3:9-10 (ESV)

I am enduring the trials before me today. I am working through them with the guidance of the LORD and as such, will prevail. More importantly, I will be rewarded for the work. No, maybe not rewarded in the now as would like. I will be rewarded when the work is done. I will have the opportunity to rest and as I am, God will make those else in the world have there time of suffering through trial. I will be resting and the world will come and see that I have done the work before and know that the LORD has cared for me all the while.

I know, rest once the work is done, but I finished the one thing. The work of the LORD is not just the one item we are able to scratch off the to-do list. I am not just able to go to church and then revel in the blessings of the LORD. I have more to do. I may get a moment to “catch my breath” after completing a task, and then it is back to the work to bring glory to the LORD. Once I have caught my breath I am able to draw on the strength of the LORD and proceed on to the next and complete that work as well and then on to the next and so on.

All of the work for the LORD takes time and effort and endurance that comes from the refining the LORD has put me through in the daily trials. I have to embrace the trials knowing that I am being refined and built up to make it through and on to the next. I will have plenty of time to rest when all of the work is complete.

I know that the work of the LORD seems to be never ending, but it will come to an end. And when it does, God will provide the chance for me to rest. In that rest I will be rewarded and that reward will be enough for me to recharge and take on again the next that He has for me. I will be able to see the work that was done and the trials endured. I will see the trials on those remaining. I will be recognized for being loved by God. I will be allowed to recharge in preparation for the work to come.

God loves me and rewards me for all that I have and will do. I know that the work is hard and that there is more of it than I can endure as a human. But God is preparing me daily through the trials before me. He is giving me the strength to endure and will also give me the opportunity to rest and be rewarded once the work is complete.

What if you just keep working, knowing that you will be able to catch your breath and then have the strength to make it through to be rewarded and have the chance to fully rest, once the work is complete?

Trial, Why are You Surprised?

“¹²Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” — 1 Peter 4:12 (ESV)

Being a Christian was never billed as being easy. In fact, as you study God’s Word, you will find that it was the same for all. All of those who follow Christ are put through the ringer of trials and persecution. As early as Adam and Eve who had it all, were tempted by the evil one. Moses was denied the promised land. Joseph was sold into slavery. Paul was imprisoned.

Even as they were put through the trials, they continued with the work of Christ. They did not let the trial be the end of them. They continued to fight for the work of Christ as they were well aware of the reward they would receive in heaven. I do believe to some degree there may have been some surprise as to the level of trial or test, yet I also believe that the surprise was short lived and they moved past it quickly and on to God’s work.

For me I have been tested and continue to be so. I am no longer surprised at the trials that come my way as a result of my work of Christ. I know that I will have difficulties and have begun to understand that they are there as refinement opportunities. I am being purified so that the work is truly for Christ and not for me or some other social acceptance.

I recently read of a brother in Christ who is struggling with a loved one they are caring for. Where I pray for guidance and comfort for them in the situation, I also remind them that the trial they are experiencing should not be a surprise. Service and the work of Christ is not and was not billed as a breeze and rewarding in the immediacy. It was and is billed as the right thing to do and done as an example of Christ’s Love. To them I say, don’t be surprised and embrace the service knowing your reward is in heaven and the trial is only refining and making you stronger.

God’s Love is full. It is there always. It is meant to be shared. It is for all. I have to remember these things and not be surprised when it feels as though God’s Love is missing in the trials that are presented. These trials are by design and I have to remember that they are to be expected and embraced as the way to grow stronger in my faith and use them as the example of what right looks like in the pressing forward in the work of Christ.

Trials Produce Results

Scientist conduct multiple trials as they work. Weight lifters attempt ever heavier weights to reach a maximum. God provides trials for me to purify me and my work for Him.

“⁹And I will put this third into the fire,

and refine them as one refines silver,

and test them as gold is tested.

They will call upon my name,

and I will answer them.

I will say, ‘They are my people’;

and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”

— Zechariah 13:9 (ESV)

I will be tested by God to make me stronger for Him and to continue to build my endurance.

“³for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” — James 1:3 (ESV)

With my endurance, I am able to withstand even more and more trials and tests. I am also able to overcome temptations that I encounter along the way. As I am dealing with and working through the trials as are presented by God, I am avoiding the idleness that leads to temptation through my engagement in the work of God. As I have studied and written before, it is this avoidance of idleness that keeps me away from the temptation as I will not have time for it as I am otherwise engaged.

“¹²Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. ¹³Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.” — James 1:12-13 (ESV)

God will test me, He will not tempt me. I am here to do His work and the tests are to build me up so that I have the strength and stamina to take my part to the end and be able to hand it off to the next in line to complete their part. Yes, that sounds like the recipe for a relay race and I meant it to be. I have but my part to be concerned with. God has already set the work to be completed and completed successfully. I have to remember that I have to do my part. I am unable to complete my part if I am not prepared and that preparedness is in the endurance that comes from the tests and trials that are presented me as I do the work of God.

God’s work will be filled with tests and trials to which I am joyful to have. No, they are not easy to deal with, they are tests and trials. What they are there for, as I included earlier, is to refine me and ensure that I am indeed working for the LORD and not my own gain.

I know there is a lot of God’s Word included here in my post. I have found that it is not my words, but God’s that are important. I am writing only to give my thoughts on what God has shown. I again stress that I am no theologian and am only a sinner working to do the work God has for me. I am willing and excited to do the work and count the tests and trials as a blessing from the LORD.

The Promise, The Law, Now Faith

I am continually reminded of God and His wisdom and faithfulness. This morning I am reading in Galatians and have been led to the passage of the law and the promise in chapter 3. As I am reading I find that God started with the promise of a savior in the lineage of Abraham. And the promise is not amended or updated or changed by anyone. God made the promise and then kept it as we all should have as well.

Next, the law was introduced to keep the promise as the human spirit will always look for the ways to get around things. The law was not to take the place of the promise, only to keep things in line until the promise was fulfilled. Once the promise was fulfilled the law will then become obsolete.

And then the promise was fulfilled with the coming of Jesus. He provided the completion of the promise and faith now takes the place of the promise as that promise was kept. A new promise was made and again it will not change by anyone, God or man the like.

“¹⁶Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, ‘And to offsprings,’ referring to many, but referring to one, ‘And to your offspring,’ who is Christ. ¹⁷This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void…²³Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. ²⁴So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.” — Galatians 3:16-17 & 23-24 (ESV)

So why the law in the first place, if the promise was to be kept? Why not just bring faith immediately instead of waiting “430 years”? Well, my thoughts are this way. What good would it be to promise something and then meet the promise at that moment. Wouldn’t it be just to act on as opposed to promising to act on? I know that I my work, I have things that are to be done and there are things that are done. If they are done, there is just the completion of the work. If there are things to be done, I commit to taking care of them by a point in time. Credibility in the promise is what is gained as the work is not that impactful in the grand scheme of things. I see that God has gained the credibility with the grand impact of Jesus. He promised and then delivered.

Until I am able to deliver on the commitment to complete things to be done, it is my duty to provide updates as to where I am in the process. I can complete things early, or if not able to meet the point in time, I am able to negotiate or report on the new point in time when expected to complete them. God provided updates in the form of laws to guide us through the time between the promise made and fulfilled. We had no defined point in time when the promise would be fulfilled, yet the laws were there to keep us on the path moving forward as we waited on the fulfillment of the promise. God gave us the promise and the updates to keep us engaged in the promise until fulfilled.

“¹⁹Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. ²⁰Now an intermediary implies more than one, but God is one.” — Galatians 3:19-20 (ESV)

As I sit here this morning, I have to take away, once again, that our approach in this world to completing work is driven by the example God provides for us. God makes promises (I make commitments), God provides laws until fulfillment (I provide updates), then God fulfilled with faith (I provide completion). I am thankful for the LORD and His wisdom in my life to guide me through it all. God promises (to come again) and then fulfills those promises (returns with victory), yet He does not leave me unattended through it all, He guides me with His Word until the promise is fulfilled.

What beliefs are you finding in this world? Are you leery of the promises that you have been given? What if you were to lean on the promises that God has made and fulfilled as the example of how we should proceed?

Added to the Family of God

I think about all that takes place to be added to a family here in this world. Well first there is the natural order of child birth. That is not the simplest of things and takes a good amount of time. Second, there is adoption and that can be time consuming and expensive and there is a lot of work to be done. There is a lot to it being added to a family here in this world. What about to be added to the family of God?

“⁴¹So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls…⁴⁶And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, ⁴⁷praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” — Acts 2: 41 & 46-47 (ESV)

I read this morning in Acts that what is required to be added to the family of God is receiving the Word of God. Only the need to hear and be added. All can happen in a few minutes. No long time to prepare. No money needed. Only to believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord and to devote yourself to Him.

“²¹And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” — Mark 10:21 (ESV)

The only requirement is to believe and follow Christ to be added to the family of God. It is not hard to be added, and the cost does not seem high. There is only to follow Christ and believe in Him to be added. And as noted from the rich young man’s story in the following verse, it is still more than most are willing to commit.

“²²Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” — Mark 10:22 (ESV)

Being added to the family is an undertaking. Whether it is adding to this worldly family and going through all the work and or time it takes. Or is it being added to the family of God and giving all of yourself to Him. Either is something that takes commitment. Although to become a member of the family of God is easy in the actions needed and only takes a moment, it is not to be done without the commitment to Christ. The devotion to Him is an in kind devotion He has to me. I have to give all of myself to Him and know that for it, I have received salvation and a relationship with Him, and my final rewards are not of this world, but in heaven.

It is worth the commitment to me. I have family here in this world that took work and continues to do so each day. I have been added to the family of God and where being added was not as difficult, my commitment is one that takes work and continues each day.

What does being added to the family of God look like to you? Are you resistant to the thought of what is required? What if you accepted the Word of God to be added to the family and then committed to the work that continues each subsequent day?

Seek First God and All Will Be Added

“³³But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33 (ESV)

The verse above is found in the passage titled “Do Not Be Anxious” in my ESV Bible. I have written from this passage a number of times and again, God has led me here for some learning this morning. He continues to lead me to the passages where I am in need and adds to my learning when I am focused on Him and that which He has for me.

My first priority should be to seek God first and His kingdom. Everything else will be provided on the basis of what God has for me in His plan for me. All else should be of no real concern as I traverse this world. I need not worry of my sustenance or provision as God will make sure I have those things needed. I should work to bring glory to God and then know that all else is from Him.

Each year I select a word to live out and in that word I work to do that which God has for me. I have over the years chosen the words, growth, learning, stand, and this year the word “more” has come to me. More action, more giving, more of me, more of the LORD in my life, more love, more joy, and more of everything.

As I sit here this morning I am looking for more through God’s Word. That more will come when I devote more of me to Him and the plans He has for me. I give more and will receive more. I do more and more will be done. I love more and more love will be given. I provide more of and for God and more will be provided to and through me. It all starts with my work for God and giving to and doing for the LORD.

I remember back to the movie “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey and see the impact of doing more. I have to apply the concept to my relationship with God and do for Him. Yes to God and all that He has for me. Doing for Him and knowing that the more I am doing for Him the more will be added to me. I am to say Yes to God and do His work and know that He has already done and will continue to do for me. I will be added to when I am glorifying Him in all that I do, so saying Yes is of high priority for me.

Here’s the thing and the caveat. I have to focus on getting things right in my relationship with God and know that when I do, He provides for me. I have to just simply do for Him and not expect anything in return, but know that He will provide all that I “need” and bless me in the process. All will be added to me when I have focused on Him and doing that which He has for me to do. I am a servant of God and not the other way around.

Nothing Can Be Added

As I have been studying, I have thought about and written that nothing should be added or taken away from the Word of God. This morning I have been reminded in God’s Word that nothing can be added to His work.

“¹⁴I perceived that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it. God has done it, so that people fear before him. ¹⁵That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already has been; and God seeks what has been driven away.” — Ecclesiastes 3:14-15 (ESV)

God endures forever and therefor His work endures forever. I forget that sometimes as I work my way through this world. I continue, as a man, working to do for myself and forget that God has already worked everything out for me as noted in verse 15 above. He has already outlined the day and the days to come for me and it is my role to dig into His word and find that outline for me and execute.

Where I am to execute the plan that God has for me, I am to do the work to get the result He has already accounted for. I refer the idea of “commander’s intent – (the desired endstate) – https://www.nwcg.gov/sites/default/files/wfldp/docs/Shattuck.pdf, page 2” in accomplishing the work. I am tasked with conducting the work and allowing God’s plan to be realized through my work. The “endstate” has already been determined by God an I am here to carry out the work to reach the “endstate”. I do not know how the work I do impacts the “endstate”, I only know that I am to do the work. The work of God is already predetermined, at least the result is, and there is nothing I can or should do to add to or take away from that end result. Each instance is its own and God has already determined it all and only the completion of the work assigned should be in my purview.

I have and will do enough to accomplish the work that God has for me. I only need to do the work assigned and allow God’s work to shine through my work. I am just the hands doing the physical labor as God is the architect of the end result. His plan has already been established and I am not here to add to that plan or take from that plan, only to execute to realize the plan.

Use God’s Word as Your Resource

In the game of life, there are a lot of things that we learn and know from early on, breathing, walking, how to use the restroom, where to keep the milk, and so on. And while these are expected to know, there are a great number of other things that one may should know or at least should know where the information is found. What sparked the War of 1812, the entirety of the US Declaration of Independence, and the physical location of all the Buc-ee’s in the US (IYKYK).

For those last few, I will say that I do not know, yet, I am able to find the information using my resources so as to get it right. When looking at and knowing God’s Word, it is important that we know as much as we can. I have to be able to carry out that which God has planned for me and know that I am moving in the right direction and following the law of God in the process. Where is it that I find all of the answers, IN HIS WORD. Yes, where else would I find the right information and can rely on it as correct, but in His Word directly.

Now, there are many versions of God’s Word out there and I have to ask myself, which one is the right one. Well that is something that I cannot decide for you. I personally utilize the English Standard Version (ESV) as my go to, but I also have on my desk, the New International Version (NIV) and the Christian Standard Bible (CSB). I also have access, online, to whatever version I would like as a resource. But notice the resource I am using to study God’s Word, HIS WORD. I may use different versions to better understand what it says, but I am using His word as the resource and not simply asking someone else.

Now, there is this game called “telephone” where information is passed through a number of people to see how accurate the information is to the original by the time it reaches the end. The overall consensus is that when it reaches the end, there is a lot that is different, added, or missing from the original version. As this is a game, it is fun and interesting to laugh at how the information changed as it reached it final destination. In this game it may be fun, yet in life, how fun is it to be working without the proper verified information. It is important that we work to get it right and the only way to ensure that the information reaches its final destination in tact and correct as it was in the beginning is to utilize the resource for the information.

When using the resources, the information is correct as written and then as received, it is correct as well. Now the interpretation of the information is not for me to talk through today, as there is something to say about the correct interpretation, yet the information is sent and received accurately as it is part of the original resource.

God’s Word is the original resource for me. It is where I start my study. I find the topic of my study, read the verse where it is found, then the passage where it is contained to get the context, and then, review other versions for more insight, and then the commentary found with the verse and passage, and then additional commentary on the verse and passage for more insight. Yes, quite the time of study, and look where I start, with the original information. I have to be sure that I am not adding or removing from God’s Word and understanding all of it as it was intended and not just picking that which I want.

“¹⁸I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, ¹⁹and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.” — Revelation 22:18-19 (ESV)

God’s Word is perfect and there is no need to add to or take away from it. Not only that, there are serious consequences when done. Plagues and removal of shares are quite the discipline and frankly something that I would wish not to happen to me. I will therefore continue to go to the source as my resource when it comes to God’s Word and my role that He has for me. I will utilize the Word of God as my guide to ensure that I am getting it right. I have a duty to the LORD and the only way to fulfill that duty correctly is to use His Word as my resource and instruction manual.

When have you found yourself working with information that may or may not be complete? Are you relying on the original resource or secondary information supplied by one or more? What if you worked on getting it right by using the original resource, and with God, using His Word?

Rely on God to Add and Do Not be Anxious

“²⁷And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” — Matthew 6:27 (ESV)

It is not by agonizing that there is addition. I sit in my office during the day and take on that which comes and in some instances concern myself with that which I do not have to continue with my work. In my role I am reliant on others to provide the information I need in order to ensure that those in my charge are getting that which they “need” to do their jobs. This reliance on others causes me anxiety as I tend to receive information in what I consider the last moment. This anxiety tends to do more harm than good in that I am too concerned with what I do not have and cannot do than that which I do have and can. The anxiety I feel certainly does not help the situation and does not gain me anything.

I have written on the passage referenced a number of times and again, God brings me back for more learning and study. All I need, God provides. No matter the work I do, I am not the provider, but the receiver.

“²⁶Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” — Matthew 6:26 (ESV)

I have to proceed in the moment and allow for God to provide and leave it all with Him. I will be provided for when I need it much like the birds. They find provision in the moment they need. When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God provided manna each day for their provision. I have to get past my want of everything when I want it and know that God will provide when I need it. No amount of worry on my part will speed the actions of God. He will add to me in His time and not a moment before. I have to remember to be content with what I have been given and know that my provision is taken care of.

Now I want to address the idea that we should then just sit and wait on God. Yes, that is true that we are to wait on God’s timing with everything and His provision. But, we are also charged with doing the work and having faith that He will come through in His time. My time, as I am the one doing the work, seems to be of importance, but it is God’s time that is being upheld in His provision for me. God works in the realm of “just in time”. His timing is perfect and I have to remember that and not be anxious about what is missing and simply do the work assigned by Him and know that what I need to complete that work will be added to when His time is right.
