Jesus is Lord, What Does That Mean

When we hear that Jesus is Lord, it should conjure up some feelings and understandings within us. But, what are they. James MacDonald asks in my study this morning what I think about when I hear that Jesus is Lord. My written response was quick and only three words, King, controller, Father. Then I kept reading and came to the realization, He is more than that and I have to think harder.

Jesus is Lord is not just about who He is but also what He is. He has titles and roles, He is not just there. Way more is Jesus as Lord than King, controller, and Father.

“¹⁵He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. ¹⁶For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. ¹⁷And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. ¹⁸And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. ¹⁹For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, ²⁰and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” – Colossians 1:15-20 (ESV)

Colossians 1:15-20 give us the picture of who Jesus is and what He does/did. MacDonald lists out six things that He is/does/did. Where I agree 100 percent, I wanted to bring my own thoughts here.

“¹In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ²He was in the beginning with God. ³All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.” – John 1:1-3 (ESV)

Jesus is Lord means that He is the everything. He is the beginning of everything. He is the end of everything. He is all things between. He created everything. Even as the image of God, there is not another like Him. Jesus as Lord is not just a role or a title or a position. He is action. He demonstrates Himself through that action. I have to remember that what He can do and does or did is as much of Him as who He is.

Something that struck me in my study this morning is our molecular structure. Our molecules should be exploding based on science yet they do not thanks to the Lordship of Jesus (see Colossians 1:17 above). He holds us together even at our most basic self. Jesus did not just create us, He keeps us together for His glory.

My thoughts of Jesus as Lord were so simplistic before, and where it is not bad to have a simple view, I have to remember that He is way more. As I have dove in and think of Jesus as Lord now, I think of Him as it all. All things come after Him, and, because of Him. I come back to the next part that John reminds us in His gospel.

“⁴In him was life, and the life was the light of men. ⁵The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:4-5 (ESV)

Jesus stands above all because He is above all. He is the light on the hill that draws us to Himself. He is looking over us and protecting us, because He created us. He loves us as a creation, but also as a Father and a brother. Jesus is Lord, because He is.

What do you think about when you hear, Jesus is Lord? Are you thinking as I did, about who He is? What if you were to add in all that He did/does and lean on that He created all things and all things are here after Him and because of Him, including you?

Teach so They Return

I am reading in Psalms again this morning, chapter 51. As I look at my bible, I have been in this chapter a lot over the years. It is no wonder why, the title of the Psalm is “Create in Me a Clean Heart, O God”. Although this morning it is not about me as I have been reminded.

Yes, I look to the LORD for guidance in my life that I might live a life pleasing to Him. I take action to do the work that He has assigned for me. Not for my glory but His.

“¹⁰For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

And those works are to lead to others growth and learning and lead them to or back to the LORD. Those works are just that, works, not just actions. Righteous actions are important, but those actions are between the LORD and me and do little for the advancement of the gospel in their own right.

“¹⁶For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it;

you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.”

— Psalm 51:16 (ESV)

The action of sacrifice or burning offerings to the LORD are for me and for others to see in me. I am to demonstrate proper action with the LORD and my faith. But I am also to do the work of Christ and that work is to spread the gospel to those I interact.

“¹³Then I will teach transgressors your ways,

and sinners will return to you.”

— Psalm 51:13 (ESV)

I have to teach as Jesus did. I have to guide others in the Word of the LORD. When I do, those will have the opportunity to come to and/or return to the LORD. They need to be led back to the LORD who they have wandered away from They need to see in me that it is okay to be with and about Him. It is acceptable to worship the LORD. It is where they belong and that the LORD wants them there for His glory. The LORD wants to be there for them. The LORD wants to the relationship with them. The LORD is grateful for their return to Him.

I forget on the regular that my role is to teach. Whether in my role at my worldly job, or in the work I perform for the LORD. I am to teach. I am to give to others that which will benefit them. I also have to remember that I cannot make them accept that which I bring to them. My role is to teach them and then encourage them to accept and use that which they have learned. With the LORD that is no different. I am to teach so that the Word of the LORD reaches. I am to encourage the exploration and continued learning of the Word of the LORD. I am to lead them to the LORD and turn them over to Him to work on their heart. I am to teach them so they have the opportunity to come to Him.

What is your role with the LORD? Are you the constant recipient and are you just taking on actions for yourself? What if you leaned into the work you are called to do and teach so that the sinners will return to the LORD?

Sometimes Action of the LORD is No Action

I find myself in prayer asking for the LORD to take action and deliver me. I find myself in circumstances that are weighing me down and in need of resolution and deliverance from those circumstances. I also find myself asking for things from the LORD and waiting on Him to do provide those things.

“¹²For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. ¹³The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.” – Exodus 12:12-13 (ESV)

Reading this morning of the Passover, I am reminded that sometimes it is the no action of the LORD that is the action He intends. You see, the people placed blood on the doorposts and lintel so that the LORD would pass over their houses and not deliver the plague of death to their home. The LORD would pass by and move on to the next house as He was delivering action to the land of Egypt.

Remember that time that you were late to work only to find that there was an accident that happened about two minutes ahead of you on the road. Or that time that you missed out on going to an event to find out later that the event was not what you expected it to be. Or that time when you were delayed and not able to make a purchase to find that the exact funds for the purchase were able to cover a debt completely.

The LORD provides in many ways for us. We may ask for things and expect that He will deliver those things in our idea of how they should be delivered, when in fact He delivers without taking action. The Israelite people were spared in the Passover thanks to their obedience to the LORD. He did not take action and delivered them from the circumstance befalling on Egypt.

I have to remember that I should continue to ask the LORD to deliver me. But I also have to remember that His deliverance may just be that He is taking no action.

What is your expectation of deliverance? Are you finding yourself seeking to be delivered in just they way you imagine? What if you simply asked for deliverance and opened yourself to the LORD and His deliverance, even when He takes no action?

There are Actions Required on Our End

I am continuing my study of the word “will” and am allowing God to lead me to what it is He would have me learn. This morning He has placed on my heart that I have actions to demonstrate my alignment and obedience with Him.

In Genesis, God made a covenant with Abraham to make him the “father of a multitude of nations”. God promised to make Abraham great and that great would extend into his immediate family and beyond.

“⁴’Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. ⁵No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. ⁶I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you.’” – Genesis 17:4-6 (ESV)

All of this was provided by God to the man who He was pleased with. God took big action in the covenant with Abraham as we would expect Him to do. But, what about the other side of the covenant. After all, a covenant is an agreement between two or more.

Covenant: “1: a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement 2a: a written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some action” – Merriam-Webster Online

So for the covenant to be active, there is action needed from both sides, and God had laid out His part. There is the obvious action from Abraham to seek and follow the LORD always, but there was also action to demonstrate understanding and obedience.

“¹⁰This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. ¹¹You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. ¹²He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,” — Genesis 17:10-12 (ESV)

And there is the action, circumcision. And not just for the future generations, but of Abraham and all in his house at the time. The LORD required bold action from Abraham to demonstrate he was all in with his side of the covenant with the LORD.

We have actions we are required to take in our relationship with the LORD. I have to remember this as there is a part of me that prays and waits for the LORD to fulfill. When in a lot, if not most of my requests, there is action needed on my end to demonstrate my obedience to Him. I may not be asked to circumcise those in my house, but there is action, bold action required of me.

What is your view of your relationship with the LORD? Are you of the mindset that God is there to do all the work at your request? What if you were to take bold action as a demonstration of obedience to Him and to fulfill you end of the agreement?

Don’t Despise Your Mother

This morning, as with all mornings, I prayed for God to give me wisdom that I might read and be able to apply His Word. As I continue to study the word “mother” I was brought to another passage in Proverbs that does not seem that much different from the last, only this one focuses on me a little more.

“²⁰A wise son makes a glad father,

but a foolish man despises his mother.”

— Proverbs 15:20 (ESV)

I know, the last passage I studied was about the foolish son being a sorrow to his mother, so yes, it did involve me. But, here I see that it is my thoughts and feelings that are the focus. I have a mother that I love and she loves me. It is difficult for me to feel any other way, or at least think of feeling any other way.

There are those out there that may not have the same relationship with their mothers and I do not expect that everyone would. I know those who have a very close relationship with their mothers whereas mine is not one where we talk every week. My oldest son in fact is one that speaks to Lori at least once if not multiple times each week, and that is great for them. The thing is that the relationship is there as is the love.

We do not have to have relationships like everyone else with our mothers. But, we do have to be wise enough to love them. It is the action of love that I am talking about, not the emotion of love. We show them that we love them as opposed to telling them. Words are that, just words. Remember the saying of old, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”. Well, words won’t hurt us, and they may not make us feel better, either. And sticks and stones, they may break bones, but they will also demonstrate healing.

Show mothers that we love them, if not for their sake, but for our own. Do not despise mothers, love them through our actions so that they can “see” them and will attribute those actions to the love we have for them.
