Delight for Your Desires

4Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” — Psalm 37:4 (ESV)

This verse is so confusing, especially to those that only think of the desires in a monetary and physical way. What I mean by confusing is that one would think that God will give you any and everything you desire if you simply take joy in Him.

I have to remember that the two parts of the verse go and work together. “Delight” in the LORD and “desires of your heart”. I have to first delight in the LORD and then He will provide me with the desires of my heart. My desires will not be for me and my physical well being, and that is where I have to be conscious. My desires will not be for me and my being here in this world, but of the kind that are recognized by God for His glory.

The common mistake in our world today is that there is an expectation that everyone gets to win with all the glory and value seen as great. There is a belief that without the greatest of things in your driveway, closet, pictures, and the like, that somehow one has not reach potential and is somehow less than others. The reality is that it is not about what others see that is had, but that which is seen by God and know to be for His glory that are important.

I want those things that show my success. I have to remember though that in order to have the kind of success as noted by living for the LORD, I will have to turn all of me to Him and allow for His giving to me based on my relationship with Him. I have to take all joy and delight in the LORD and know that when doing so, I will given all that I could ever want, more time and glory with Him in heaven at my appointed time.

Your relationship with the LORD, what does it look like? Are you looking for Him to provide for your worldly desires? What if you turned to Him for the desires of your heart that are pointing to a stronger and robust relationship with Him?
